Austin, TX 78701

Price: $20 advance, $30 at the door

When I first came to Austin, it was a couple of years after recording with Jerry Jeff Walker (on LA Freeway, among others), and much to my delight, the Cosmic Cowboy scene was in full swing. My band Partners In Crime followed a bunch of great groups in and out of venues—Willie, Jerry Jeff, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Lost Gonzo Band, Denim, Plum Nelly.

Imagine players from those bands sitting around reminiscing and playing all of the great songs of that era—that's the Lost Austin Band: Bob Livingston, Craig Hillis, Ernie Gammage, Bill Browder, David Moerbe, and yours truly. Great fun, great music.

The 9th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot - 7-10:30PM
301 West Riverside Drive
Austin, TX 78704
512.472.9304
Price: $10 suggested donation

Now that the Bloody Super Moon has come and gone, it’s time for the 9th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot. On November 8th at Threadgill’s World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, an impressive collection of performers will gather from 7 to 10:30PM to celebrate the music of Gram Parsons, benefitting the Americana Music Association. The suggested donation is $10.

Host Patterson Barrett will lead the house band, as invited guest artists perform their favorite Gram Parson’s songs in this annual musical homage to the man whose influence on the artists and music of the current Americana movement is still felt today. This is not only a night for Parson’s fans to remember, but an opportunity for those not familiar with his music to hear and enjoy it for the first time. This year’s event will again benefit the Americana Music Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the genre of music that Parsons helped define.

As anyone who has attended previous shows will attest, this evening promises to be a wonderful time for all, filled with great music and memorable performances.
Join the league of Parsons fans to celebrate his legacy of cosmic American music and help support this great organization.

A few early confirmed performers include:

Gurf Morlix
Earl P. Ball
Christine Albert & Chris Gage
Phil Hurley
Betty Soo
Noel McKay & Brennen Leigh
Brian Pounds
Jimmy Davis
Mark Hallman
Charlie Murphy

And house band:
Patterson Barrett
Cam King
Rob Bollinger
Chojo Jacques
John Hahn
Steve Carter
Marty Muse
Mike Rieman

GRAM PARSONS
Gram Parsons, born in 1946 as Cecil Ingram Connor III, was a pioneer in the marriage between rock and country music. A singer, songwriter and guitarist, Parsons sold few records in his career, but was a monumental influence on fellow rock and country musicians, including the Rolling Stones and the Byrds. With the Byrds' Chris Hillman, Parsons formed the Flying Burrito Brothers, which is often regarded as the first country rock band. Parsons dubbed his musical style "Cosmic American Music," a term which never gained popularity in mainstream terminology, but one he felt best described his music. In 1973, at the age of 26, Parsons died near his favorite vacation spot, Joshua Tree National Monument.

8th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot

Halloween decorations are appearing on store shelves, and that means it’s time for the 8th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot. On November 3rd at Threadgill’s World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, an impressive collection of performers will gather from 7 to 10:30PM to celebrate the music of Gram Parsons, benefitting the Americana Music Association.

Host Patterson Barrett will lead the house band, as invited guest artists perform their favorite Gram Parson’s songs in this annual musical homage to the man whose influence on the artists and music of today’s Americana movement is still felt today.

In 1973, at the age of 26, Parsons died near his favorite vacation spot, Joshua Tree National Monument.

w/Walt Wilkins & The Mystiqueros - 9-10:30 PM
1320 South Lamar
Austin, TX 78704
512.448.2552
Price: $10

After 3 years of playing in this Walt Wilkins-led group, I'm still the new guy. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Various cast members drawn from a rich reservoir of talent rotate in and out each week. I'm still playing songs I've never heard. This reminds me of very early shows I saw of Michael Murphey, with Bob Livingston, Gary Nunn, Craig Hillis...almost spiritual. Out In The Alleys Of Austin, indeed.

When I first heard this band in 1975 I immediately became a fan. I ended up playing with them some number of years later, have recorded their songs, and played on several cds. We don't perform together nearly often enough, so come on out and hear some great songs and fabulous harmonies.

Nashville, Austin, San Miguel Mexico
Played a bunch; didn't blog! I'll do Better!

Looking back, I see that in addition to my recurring Wednesday nights at the Saxon Pub in Austin with Walt Wilkins & the Mystiqueros, I've played some with Noel McKay & Brennen Leigh, Craig Marshall (both live and in the Studio), Steady Freddie Krc (recently elected to the office of president for the Austin chapter of the musicians union), Texas guitar legend John Inmon, played numerous events with Stephanie Urbina Jones (including a festival in San Miguel deAllende, Mexico), was part of a Lost Gonzo Band reunion, some Austin All-Stars shows, some shows with Denim, accompanied Brian Pounds (recently voted off the Voice), newcomer Micah Wagner, and played alongside Well Worn Soles (a duo featuring my son Emerson).

I also found time to sing some of my own songs, most notably at the International Folk Alliance Festival & Conference and the infamous Bluebird Café.

I'll try and write about any future gigs before they happen, so you can make a plan to come and listen. I promise to try and do better. Thanks all!

After 2 years of playing in this Walt Wilkins-led group, I'm still the new guy.

6th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot

Fall is here and it’s time for the 6th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot. On November 5th at Threadgill’s World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, an impressive collection of performers will gather from 7 to 10:30PM to celebrate the music of Gram Parsons, benefitting the Americana Music Association.

Host Patterson Barrett will lead the house band, as invited guest artists perform their favorite Gram Parson’s songs in this annual musical homage to the man whose influence on the artists and music of today’s Americana movement is still felt today. This is not only a night for Parson’s fans to remember, but an opportunity for those not familiar with his music to hear and enjoy it for the first time.

This year’s event will benefit the Americana Music Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the genre of music that Parsons helped define.

As anyone who has attended previous shows will attest, this evening promises to be a wonderful time for all, filled with great music and memorable performances.

When I first heard this band in 1975 I immediately became a fan. I ended up playing with them some number of years later, have recorded their songs, and played on several cds. We don't perform together nearly often enough, so come on out and hear some great songs (and dance!)

1320 South Lamar
Austin, TX 78704

Price: $10

After more than a year of playing in this Walt Wilkins-led group, I'm still the new guy.

This reminds me of very early shows I saw of Michael Murphey, with Bob Livingston, Gary Nunn, Craig Hillis...almost spiritual. Out In The Alleys Of Austin, indeed.

Although you wouldn’t know it by looking at a thermometer, fall is here and it’s time for the 5th Annual Gram Parsons Birthday Hoot. On November 6th at Threadgill’s World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, an impressive collection of performers will gather from 7 to 10:30PM to celebrate the music of Gram Parsons, benefitting the Americana Music Association.

Past year’s shows have featured members of Reckless Kelly, Band Of Heathens, Rosie Flores, Gurf Morlix, Michael Fracasso, Josh Zee and Teal Collins of the Mother Truckers, Earl P. Ball, members of Stonehoney, Freddie Steady Krc, Geoff Union of the Too High String Band, Betty Soo, Jenny Reynolds, Ben Mallott, Idgy Vaughn and a host of others.

Join the league of Parsons fans to celebrate his legacy of cosmic American music and help support this great organization.
