    Be My Guest (2:52)

--Fats Domino, John Marascalco & Tommy Boyce (BMI) EMI Unart Catalog Inc.

Come on baby and be my guest

Come join the party and meet the rest

Everything’s gonna be all right so be my guest tonight

We’re gonna dance to the rock and roll

We might even do the Stroll

We’re gonna Lindy Hop and Susie-Q

It’s a special party just for you

    My, my-oh-my

    Gee, you’re so fine

    Don’t let me down

I’m the King, but you can wear my crown

I’m gonna sing, my band’s gonna play

I’m gonna make you queen for a day

Everything’s gonna be all right so be my guest tonight

    My, my-oh-my

    Gee, you’re so fine

    Don’t let me down

I’m the King, but you can wear my crown

I’m gonna sing, my band’s gonna play

I’m gonna make you queen for a day

Everything’s gonna be all right so be my guest tonight

  • 03:36 Story Lyrics 3 Young Alleycats

Three young alleycats sitting on a fence

Trying to find a way to make their rents

It don’t take much but it takes all we got

So we show up for work at the lumber yard

The money’s not bad, the work’s not hard

But it’s gonna take a few more two-steps to get out of here

Watching the stars rise and fall

Don’t it seem like the universe used to be a little bit smaller

     Way back when

Now the universe will never be the same again

At the fork in the road there’s a hole in the wall

The stage is set, but it’s kind of small

Hey, I think I heard someone singing my song

Country loving doesn’t hold the key

But there’s something in her eyes I see

Something so rare when she sings

Watching the stars rise and fall

Don’t it seem like the universe used to be a little bit smaller

     Way back when

Now the universe will never be the same again

    We’re all passing time

Who knows just what we’ll find

We’ll all be paid in kind

Now the dust has settled, the wind has blown

The ashes are scattered and the kids are grown

And how long we can howl at the moon, no one can tell

I’m not prepared for the rockin’ chair,

I heard that thing ain’t going nowhere

So Rick, Richard and Levon won’t you wait a spell

Watching the stars rise and fall

Don’t it seem like the universe used to be a little bit smaller

     Way back when

Now the universe will never be the same again

No, the universe will never be the same again

Give ‘Em What They Want (5:24)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

A bar in New York City, a line running out the door

Inside it’s shoulder-to-shoulder on every inch of floor

Somehow I climbed up on the stage, started to sing

Thirty minutes later you could’ve heard a dropped pin ring

    I wasn’t giving them what they wanted---But I tried

I didn’t give ‘em they wanted that night

But if you give them what they want

Well, you might get what you need

A brew pub in Frederick, Maryland, outside Washington, DC

Where people come to hear the songs, now all ears are on me

I sing my songs about heartbreak full of sweet, sad misery

Somehow hearing those me sing those songs helps to set their poor hearts free

I was giving them what they wanted

Well, I give them what they wanted that night

If you give them what they want

Then you might get what you need

Sometimes I’m set to wondering, what was I sent here to do

The only time I know my mind is when I sing and play for you

Somewhere out in Virginia, playing with my boy and young KT

Doing our best to be seen and heard above the big flat-screen TV

The place was full, the crowd was loud, call it chaos and cacophony

But everyone sings along when they play the song about Johnson City, Tennessee

We were givin’g them what they wanted

Yeah, we give ‘em what they wanted that night

If you give them what they want

You might get what you need

I got a family to feed . . . two kids in college

You know knowledge don’t come cheap

They got to eat, they need shoes on their feet

  • 04:15 Story Lyrics Coldwater County

    Coldwater County (4:15)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

    How dry I am

    In Coldwater County

Here comes the bride, well I sure could use a drink

She brought joy to the world while she was still single

She’ll be mama’s little baby with fourteen children before you can blink

Up in this holler ten-years ago a beautiful young girl with something to show

We all had a look and my love started to grow

But she never took notice of me

    How dry I am

    In Coldwater County

    Here comes the bride

Well I sure could use a drink

She brought joy to the world while she was still single

She’ll be mama’s little baby with fourteen children before she can blink

Young men have dreams and we all dreamed of her

Life would be heaven with her, we were sure

But I left this place chasing dreams of my own

I imagined her waiting at home

    How dry I am

    In Coldwater County

    Here comes the bride

Well I sure could use a drink

She brought joy to the world while she was still single

She’ll be mama’s little baby with fourteen children before she can blink

    Life’s about change

    Of that there’s no doubt

Some things we need, some we do without

I think to myself as they walk down the aisle

Well I’m glad it’s not me in those shoes

    How dry I am

    In Coldwater County

    Here comes the bride

Well it’s later than you think

She’ll bring joy to his world now she’s no longer single

They’ll be mama’s little babies with fourteen children before they can blink

    There’ll be mama’s little babies

    Now how about that drink

  • 04:04 Story Lyrics If I Only Knew How

If I Only Knew How (4:04)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

When the world around you comes tumbling down

To crush all your dreams, you come looking for me

If I had the answer, if I knew the plan

Well I’d put all those pieces back where they belong

    If I only knew how

There’d be no reason for you to struggle anymore

    I’d make your trouble disappear

    Your life would be softer

My love would wash your pain away

    And I’d make everything OK

    If I only knew how

    If I only knew how

And if I had the power to change the hour

I’d turn back the clock before tragedy struck

But that can’t be done, I can’t change the outcome

But I’d give you a chance at life simple and free

    If I only knew how

There’d be no reason for you to struggle anymore

    I’d make your trouble disappear

    Your life would be softer

My love would wash your pain away

    And I’d make everything OK

    If I only knew how

    If I only knew how

    Hold on to me

I will try and find a way

There’ll be no reason for you to struggle anymore

    I’ll make your trouble disappear

Your life will be sweeter once we defeat your misery

    And I’ll make everything OK

    If I only knew how

    If I only knew how

    If I only knew how

    If I only knew how

    Elephant in the Room (3:07)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

How you been lately, I thought maybe

    We could get together soon

    The conversation starts to bloom

But there’s an elephant in the room

    Things left unsaid

    Are those flowers dead?

    Emotional gumbo, there sits Jumbo

The big fellow’s sure working hard

    The conversation could get hot

Is there an elephant or is there not?

    Believe me when I say

It’s best to keep things gray

Talk about baggage, there’s a whole lot of junk in that trunk

You know what they say about loose lips, and we don’t want to get sunk

    Elephants carry a heavy load

You don’t want to be here when it explodes

‘Cause it will take lots more than a broom

To get all of the elephant out of this room

We don’t want to clear the air

It’s more than we can bear

    So we embrace the Pachyderm

    And keep our friendship firm

    Where and When (5:08)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

Walking home this evening, well it’s happening again

I just can’t stop this feeling when I remember the where and when

Now this sorrow seems familiar, but I don’t feel it every day

I guess it’s just a part of life, It’s made me stronger in a way

You dismantled my heart part and parcel

And I don’t know if I’ll ever love again

Now my mind’s a little hazy about what you had to say to me

But I remember the where and when

It was in the park near the river, you know that one downtown

We used to go there after work sometimes, hold hands and watch the sun go down

There were people all around us walking dogs and riding bikes

And there’s a small wooden bench down there by the shore

Or at least there used to be---I don’t go there anymore

It was a bright crisp clear sunny day in the very beginning of fall

I was just heading home from the office andI was happy when I got your call

You said meet me at our usual place and I wonder thinking back on it now

Why I never even detected a trace of something strange in your voice somehow

Now this sorrow seems familiar, but I don’t feel it every day

I guess it’s just a part of life, It’s made me stronger in a way

You dismantled my heart part and parcel

And I don’t know if I’ll ever love again

Now my mind’s a little hazy about what you had to say to me

But I remember the where and when

We sat down and you were restless, but I didn’t notice it then

All I could see was your beautiful hair brushed aside by a warm gentle wind

And you said something, I don’t know what, and all I could do was stare
And when the moment arrived I thought I saw in your eye, a hint of a tear forming there

I still remember just where and when

So clearly---I remember the where and when

    Last Night in Barcelona (3:43)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

My last night in Barcelona after a long stay

We were invited out to a little bar called Tekila spelled with a “K”

The day was long, the night was hot, but we went anyway

I could not speak the language so I grabbed a guitar and I started to play

And there was music and everybody sang and danced with each other

Singing words I did not understand

My head was swimming in a sea of liquid dreams

    My last night in Barcelona

They offered me drink, and then they offered me one more

And before I knew what was happening, I’d had another four

The room began to spin a bit but in a pleasant way

I gathered up my courage, I stood up to sing and they all started to sway

And there was music and everybody sang and danced with each other

Singing words I did not understand

My head was swimming in a sea of liquid dreams

    My last night in Barcelona

And they sang a song I knew so well

But I’d never heard the words before

*A la novia que yo tengo, tequila le digo yo

Pues cuando le doy un beso, borracho me siento yo

Y como quema, pero es tan Buena

    Te pides otra,,casi sin respiración

     ¡Tequila!

And there was music and everybody sang and danced with each other

Singing words I did not understand

My head was swimming in a sea of liquid dreams

    My last night in Barcelona

    My last night in Barcelona

    My last night in Barcelona

    *(roughly)

I have a bride, Tequila I call her

Because when I kiss her, I feel drunk

And it burns, but it feels so good

You ask for another, almost breathless

    Tequila!

  • 04:12 Story Lyrics Take a Chance

    Take a Chance (4:13)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

After all these years to find myself in this circumstance

Ready to take a chance on love

You wandered through my dreams like you were born there

And you stepped into my world and left your songs there

I wore my sorrow like a cloak to keep me warm

In the cold gray morning after love’s brutal storm

Now I can’t believe that I’d receive this gift again

Waiting for the ride to end

After all these years to find myself in this circumstance

Ready to take a chance on love

Being with you is way too easy

Am I being blinded by your bright light?

So long in the dark it’s hard to trust my eyes again

Can I love once more; if not now, then when?

Now I can’t believe that I’d receive this gift again

Waiting for the ride to end

After all these years to find myself in this circumstance

Ready to take a chance on love

How can I resist love’s slow burning kiss

I know the way so well that it’s hard to tell if I‘m leading or being led

Now I can’t believe that I’d receive this gift again

Waiting for the ride to end

After all these years to find myself in this circumstance

Ready to take a chance on love

Now I can’t believe that I’d receive this gift again

Waiting for the ride to end

After all these years to find myself in this circumstance

Ready to take a chance on love

    Take a chance on love

    Can I love again?

Just one more chance at love

    A Way Back Home (4:56)

--Patterson Barrett ©2017 (BMI) Criminal Tunes

Searching for an answer and finding not a clue

Upon close examination the answer is in you

You may not want to believe it, I think that what you’ve heard is true

Look inside, find what you need to know

    Illuminated intuition shows

Your heart sends you where you need to go

In your mind try to find a way to get back home

Too many years ago to count, he left and hit the road

His mind was churning every day trying to break the code

He spent a lifetime looking for someplace to unload

He looked inside and found what he needed to know

    Revelation as intuition showed

His heart sent him where he needed to go

All that time was trying to find a way to get back home

I don’t remember feeling so far away from here

But it’s easy to see clearly with the destination near

Oncemy vision was distorted by uncertainty and fear

I looked inside and found what I needed to know

    Illuminated intuitions show

My heart sent me where I needed to go

In my mind I was trying to find a way to get back home

Out of your mind, now it’s time to find your way back home

Flying blind, we’re all trying to find a way back home

NOTES
As in his two previous solo outings, Barrett makes much of the music on Give ‘Em What They Want himself, but there are plenty of guest appearances by friends and peers. Featured performers include Jim Lauderdale, Walt Wilkins, and Stuart Duncan, plus Gurf Morlix and Buddy Miller sharing vocals with Barrett on the single “3 Young Alleycats.” Credited to “3 Ol' Alleycats,” the song is a reminiscence of the days gone by when Morlix, Miller, and Barrett were knocking around Austin. In it, the three declare wistfully, “The universe will never be the same again,” but then muse “How long we can howl at the moon, no one can tell.”
The music is solidly Americana, with nods to influences as diverse as The Band, Little Feat, and Gram Parsons, all of whom Barrett cites as inspirations. At times the songs lean toward the country side of things, as in the slyly humorous, two-step inducing “Elephant In The Room” (with Lauderdale on harmony vocal.)
But there are also introspective singer-songwriter moments, notably in “If I Only Knew How,” with Barrett finding himself unable to help those close to him who need it the most.
