From the recording I Must Be Dreaming

When my children were young, my wife announced that we needed to go to church. She said it didn't matter to her which church, just that we needed to expose our children to some spirituality, and she gave me the task of picking. As a child, I attended a Unitarian Universalist church (I guess most Unitarians will go so far as to use the word "church"), and so I visited a UU church in Austin.
I happened to attend the week a prominent member's daughter had killed herself. I was moved to write this song.

Lyrics

How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart
Learning to see is the hardest part
I know that you’re here somewhere
But I can’t feel a thing no matter how I stare
How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart again

One time, one chance, one heart in your hands
One day, it all comes crashing down
Where were you when she needed you
Surely there was something you could do
Now I’ve cried all my tears and my crying is through
And I can’t see the light anymore

How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart
Learning to see is the hardest part
I know that you’re here somewhere
But I can’t feel a thing no matter how I stare
How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart again

One day, one man, alone and confused, here I stand
One question occupies my mind
Her blood on her own hands, how can this be a part of any master plan
Now you’re asking me to believe again
I don’t know if I can

How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart
Learning to see is the hardest part
I know that you’re here somewhere
But I can’t feel a thing no matter how I stare
How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart again

Some day, somehow, we’ll talk, but not now
My heart is cold, my words just frozen pain
Maybe death takes a turn today, but I just have to turn away
And a thousand tears won’t wash away this shadow on my soul

How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart
Learning to see is the hardest part
I know that you’re here somewhere
But I can’t feel a thing no matter how I stare
How can walking ‘round blind put you back in my heart again
